House Slashes Spending for Food Safety

News agencies are reporting the House of Representatives passed a bill that makes significant cuts to food safety programs.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bears the brunt of the cuts. The FDA — which is charged with implementing the first change to the US Food Supply in 50years – loses $285 million  compared to fiscal year 2011, an 11.5 percent reduction in discretionary funding. Of the cut food safety programs take $87 million of the hit.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service would also see reductions. The agency’s budget is cut $35 million compared to FY 2011, a less than 4 percent cut for meat, poultry, and processed egg inspection.

The Food Safety Modernization Act’s budget is barely sufficient to meet the law’s lofty aims. Yet as the battle over the deficit continues the FDA will likely face tough choices that will ultimately mean fewer changes and perhaps less focus on prevention than hoped.
