Food Safety Modernization Act Funded in Continuing Resolution
Detail are emerging about what programs were cut or left underfunded in the budget compromise reached on Friday. The good news from the political fight is that the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) will be funded. The continuing resolution will be voted on this week and if passed will fund the government through September 2011.
The CR budget will provide $2.45 billion to the Food and Drug Administration, compared with $2.1 billion sought in the House plan. The Senate Appropriations Committee states this funding level will allow FDA to continue to implement FSMA, and it will provide $1 billion to fund the Food Safety and Inspection Service.
